An Evolving Tradition: More Couples are Eloping

In a trend evolving past traditional weddings, many couples are choosing elopement over the pomp and circumstance of a large ceremony and reception and flocking to Minnesota’s North Shore.

Smaller, more intimate ceremonies - which may include just the couple or a handful of select attendees - are on the rise at a number of Northern Minnesota resorts and hotels, including the Cotton Mansion in Duluth. The Cotton Mansion features romantic guest rooms, stunning common areas, a veranda and a beautiful foyer that is picture perfect for couples eloping. The award-winning bed and breakfast has performed more than 200 elopements and ceremonies for couples who prefer a smaller setting that can offer a number of other benefits.

“While individual circumstances certainly vary, many couples cite the rising costs of a wedding, which in 2017 averaged over $30,000,” said Kimberly Aparicio, owner, Cotton Mansion. “One of the things many couples tell us is that they wanted to do something that was special, but don’t want to spend a lot of money, or excessive time planning.”

A small ceremony or elopement can offer many of the same details of a traditional wedding, like exchanging of vows, various ceremonies, music, and more. Many venues including resorts, bed and breakfasts and hotels have packages that include an officiant, photographer and more, so couples can easily choose what is included in their elopement ceremony.

“Working with the venue, you can choose what elements you want to be included so it feels tailored and special to you,” added Aparicio. “It really takes the pressure of planning off, so the couple can focus on each other, and all they need to do is show up and say ‘I do.’”
